So here’s the true Facebook Story for the day:
In a meeting with a librarian last week I mentioned something I’d noticed on the Library’s Facebook Page. Nothing too exciting. Just some middle school banter that bordered on inappropriate. I asked her if she’d noticed it, too.
Funny thing was… the librarian didn’t know about the Facebook Page and, when she investigated further, she couldn’t find anyone else on staff who knew about it.
Someone else had apparently set up the site, using on old — but official — logo.
Let me just say that there wasn’t anything harmful on the site. Not malicious at all. Likely, someone set it up with good intentions. And it had been dormant for several months.
But that doesn’t make it okay. Online branding matters. You can’t control what people say about you or your organization, but you should know who is trying to be your megaphone.
The good news: The library contacted Facebook and Facebook is pulling the site. All is right with the library.
But what about the rest of the world?
For years, people have suggested that each of us Google ourselves to see what we look like in the big Cyber Mirror.
Let’s take it the next logical step further: When was the last time you Googled your organization, business or even the library? Look even closer, too: Search directly for it on Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter.
Do you like what you see?
